Jesse Walker knew that they’d soon find Willard’s and Alice’s bodies. And they’d also quickly realize that the old man’s money had been stolen, telling them that Elmer Wilson probably hadn’t died of natural causes but instead been murdered. So as far as Jesse was concerned he was going to be tied to three murders up at the mansion in Gold Hill. Three murders would earn him a vengeance-filled posse bent on exacting swift rope justice.

And then there was the matter of Marshal Custis Long and that other marshal who would take these murders personally and not rest until they killed or hanged him.

“I’ve got to get rid of this buggy and I’ve got to do it in a hurry,” he said as dawn broke and found him driving along a poor track along the side of a steep mountain. On the downside of the road, the earth dropped away for hundreds of feet into the belly of a dark canyon.
